Walking along Victoria Street, you would never suspect that one of Toronto’s best bakeries is close by. The Prairie Girl Bakery, located at 18 King Street East (the store faces Victoria Street), has been booming with business since their recent opening in April 2011. Despite being highly-specialized, Prairie Girl Bakery has become a local favourite for Torontonians tourists and natives alike. Upon inquiring about their “secret ingredient,” Nadia (an employee at Prairie Girl) informed me that ensuring the cupcakes are baked fresh daily and using only natural ingredients is the key to making delicious treats.
I bought a mini vanilla-strawberry cupcake, and I can attest to their tasty treats. Their strawberry frosting, for example, contains real strawberries (you can taste the fruit!) with butter, sugar, milk, and all other natural ingredients. The cupcakes are so soft and fresh that you can tell they are void of preservatives and artificial flavours.
When they enter the store, customers can select their dessert choice from the rows of baking sheets with different-sized cupcakes. Although the store doesn’t have a dine-in option, clients can buy an individual cupcake, or buy a box where you can select from an array of choices.
The Prairie Girl Bakery Menu
The Prairie Girl Bakery menu falls under three categories:
- Grandma’s Dark Cocoa Cupcakes, which feature vanilla bean butter icing, chocolate cream cheese icing, peppermint butter icing, strawberry butter icing, and peanut butter icing.
- Mom’s Golden Buttermilk Cupcakes, topped with vanilla bean butter icing, chocolate cream cheese icing, strawberry butter icing, toasted coconut on vanilla icing, and lemon butter icing.
- Prairie Girl Bakery Specialties, which include Rebecca’s Red Velvet Cupcakes with Classic Cream Cheese Icing, Banana Cupcakes swirled with Peanut Butter Icing, and Carrot Cupcakes with Classic Cream Cheese Icing.
Generally, the categories feature vanilla and chocolate mini cupcakes and large cupcakes, which are then coupled with one of a multitude of different frostings. Combinations include: vanilla cake/chocolate frosting, vanilla cake/strawberry frosting, chocolate cake/peppermint frosting, vanilla cake/lemon frosting, chocolate cake/peanut butter frosting, red velvet cake/cream cheese frosting, carrot cake/cream cheese frosting, vanilla cake/ coconut frosting, and more. A special menu card detailing the different combinations is available at the store for customers to select from. The prices are pretty good as well, but vary depending on the item.
They also have a delicious “Treat of the Week” that features new combinations which may not be on the menu. Ask one of Prairie Girl Bakery’s friendly employees and they will give you a hand! While I wouldn’t recommend you eat a cupcake every day (although, trust me, Prairie Girl Bakery’s cupcakes are that good!), these cupcakes are perfect for commercial functions, family get-togethers, and snacks. The nutritional information for the cupcakes isn’t available yet, but I’m sure the great taste and fair prices make Prairie Girl cupcakes a wonderful treat!
