Let Them Eat Cake!
At long last summer is here, and with it all of the warm weather celebrations. Weekends are filled with graduation parties, bridal showers, weddings, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, children’s birthday parties, and my favourite, the sweet smells of cherry blossoms, lavender, and backyard barbeques. Nothing makes a statement at a party quite like the perfect cake! It’s the focal point of a little one’s special day, and the sweet reward after sitting through hours of wedding speeches. Finding the perfect cake is like finding the perfect home, it’s not to be entered into lightly!
Enter Chloe Salerno, baking goddess extraordinaire, making out-of-this-world cakes from her home in midtown Toronto. All of her cakes are custom, made-to-order, making them special and unique where no two cakes are alike – unless we’re talking about her delicious cupcakes! In a nutshell, Chloe is amazing. Working with her is easy and fun, and when asked what inspires her, Chloe said her clients. She loves to hear their unique ideas and requests: a son’s treasured storybook, a daughter’s favourite fairy tale character, then Chloe takes to it next level – literally – with her layered cakes.
Recently, for a little boy’s birthday she made a cake about his favourite story, “The Hungry Caterpillar,” a story about a caterpillar who eats his way through seven days of food and at the end becomes a beautiful butterfly. Chloe recreated the story on a layered cake that shows the hungry caterpillar eating his way up and around the sides of the cake, climbing up the layers decorated with all of the different foods in the story, and at the top of the cake, was the beautiful butterfly he becomes. There’s something so whimsical and pretty about her birthday cakes; for me, it brings back the nostalgia of childhood birthday parties, a way of transporting me back to the past – there’s some kind of magic in those cakes.
Chloe started out her baking career quite modestly. She and her uncle decided to take a baking class just for fun, and she hasn’t been able to put down the spatula since! A now certified baker from George Brown College, Chloe takes her talent from her hearth to your table. When asked what her favourite part about baking is, she said it was the final touch: decorating. Getting creative with frosting and swirls and fondant, conjuring up mouth-watering combinations like her favourite chocolate cake with salted caramel butter cream icing. She even shared with me the secret ingredient to her melt-in-your-mouth chocolate cake, but I’ll let you taste that for yourself!
When I asked Chloe what she loves most about Toronto, she said through a smile, “That’s a tough one; there are so many things I love about Toronto. I think it’s the greatest city in the world, but I guess I’m biased.” Well, the ilovetoronto.com team loves Chloe back. She is our number one recommendation for cakes and cupcakes for any kind of occasion this summer. I think I’m going to have to agree with Marie Antoinette on this one: let them eat cake!

Dog owners and their four-legged friends in Toronto have another reason to rejoice. Purina Pawsway, a pet center located at Harbourfront, decided to make Toronto even more welcoming for the dogs and launched a new Pawsway Pet-Friendly Loyalty Program. The idea of the program is to bring local businesses and pet owners closer together by designating pet-friendly spots in the city.

IVY LAM – Amazing Make-up Artist
There was no doubt in my mind that the first person I needed to brag about was one of my ultimate faves, Ivy Lam! Ivy came highly recommended to me as a make-up artist for my wedding. Artist she is!!! WOW!! I think she may also be a magician because after getting my make-up done with her I felt like a new person – red carpet ready (OK not quite, but as close as I will ever feel)!
It is not surprising that she is such a talent with 8 years experience, a background in photography and art, and a passion that she has had as long as she can remember. Nor is it surprising that I am not the only one singing her praises or lining up for her services, including many interesting celebrities (which is really fun to ask her about! You know those people that you meet that are so talented but are also just amazing people, she is one of those rare combos! She is a pleasure to talk to and to be around!
If you ever need to feel your best for a night out, special ocassion, wedding…..Ivy is amazing, the best! Did I mention she also does hair and has her own make-up line?
